LIFE…It can be quite challenging at times to cling on to hope when everything in the world is telling you to do the exact opposite. For some reason, it has become extremely convenient for us to give up and throw in the towel when the unexpected emerges in our lives. People are running in the opposite direction of their dreams of having a fulfilling life due to fear or the opinions of others. Then there are others who have given up on the idea of living an abundant life because somehow things didn’t transpire the way they thought it should have or the timing didn’t line up with their desires. So what do you do? How do you get out of the funk and frustration of being stagnant so you can live life with passion and purpose?
GET OUT OF YOUR OWN WAY AND REFOCUS-Sounds so simple doesn’t it? However, many of us struggle with the sugar-coated reality of our own stubbornness and casual mindsets of “oh it will get done when it gets done.” No, it will get done when you put some action to your goals. There’s a quote by Antoine de Saint which states that “a goal without a plan is just a wish.”
James 2:14-17 (MSG) says “Dear friends, do you think you’ll get anywhere in this if you learn all the right words but never do anything? Does merely talking about faith indicate that a person really has it? For instance, you come upon an old friend dressed in rags and half-starved and say, “Good morning, friend! Be clothed in Christ! Be filled with the Holy Spirit!” and walk off without providing so much as a coat or a cup of soup—where does that get you? Isn’t it obvious that God-talk without God-acts is outrageous nonsense?” Take some time to clear out the clutter, whether that is physically, emotionally or spiritually; it must be done in order to successfully move forward.
CUT OFF ROTTEN ROOTS. PLANT MOTIVATION AND POSITIVITY
How many of us can admit that we’ve bullied ourselves with toxic self-talk and thinking? It’s one thing to say that you don’t entertain the company of certain people because of their negative mindsets and behavior but have you taken inventory over your own thoughts lately? What seeds are you planting in your life and the lives of others? What do you spend your time listening to, reading and watching?
It has been said that we produce up to 50,000 thoughts in a day. What surprises many is that with some of us, out of those 50,000 thoughts, 80% of those are negative. As a believer, it is important to know that all of those negative thoughts (satan’s lies) have no truth to them and in fact, they are an exact opposite of God’s truth and promises for your life. So how do you cut off negative thinking before it takes root in your life? The first step is to shut down any and all intruding toxic thoughts as soon as they come to mind and replace them with the promises of God. God’s word says
“For the rest, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is worthy of reverence and is honorable and seemly, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely and lovable, whatever is kind and winsome and gracious, if there is any virtue and excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think on and weigh and take account of these things [fix your minds on them].” (Philippians 4:8 AMP) Here is another translation of that same verse. “Summing it all up, friends, I’d say you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious—the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse. Put into practice what you learned from me, what you heard and saw and realized. Do that, and God, who makes everything work together, will work you into his most excellent harmonies.” (MSG)
How powerful is that scripture! Once you have redirected your thoughts to God’s promises, the next step will automatically come naturally. Know who you are and Whose you are. When you know who you are in Christ, you leave no room for the enemy to disturb your thoughts. Sometimes we can get comfortable in our walk that we tend to forget the power in the truth of God being our Father and that same power from thousands of years ago is STILL just as powerful today.
KEEP LOOKING FORWARD-I’m not saying that I have this all together, that I have it made. But I am well on my way, reaching out for Christ, who has so wondrously reached out for me. Friends, don’t get me wrong: By no means do I count myself an expert in all of this, but I’ve got my eye on the goal, where God is beckoning us onward—to Jesus. I’m off and running and I’m not turning back. (Philippians 3:12-14)
We all know that distractions will come but it’s how you handle those distractions that make all the difference. Yes, things will be thrown in your path; that comes with the journey of life but always try to have a positive outlook from a not so great situation and continue looking forward to all that God has for you. Remember, the choice is yours. Your current circumstance does not have to define your outcome.
