How many times have you given up or not even tried due to fear? Fear of failure, fear of your actions, fear of success, fear that you might actually prove people wrong, etc. Many of us have either experienced fear or are currently battling with this spirit. Whatever side of the fence you are sitting on concerning fear, you are not alone. It is a spirit that is very sneaky and if you aren’t careful, its side effects can be highly toxic.
SIDE EFFECTS INCLUDE
These are only a few of the side effects that develop through embracing fear. Believe it or not, this spirit is self-destructive. You have the power to choose if you are going to be fearful or fearless. If you are going to give up or dig deeper and obtain all the blessings that God has for you. One of the greatest tricks and distractions that the enemy uses is fear. He wants you to be paralyzed by fear so that you will never realize the power that is yours through the blood of Jesus. He wants you to doubt God, to worry about that bill that needs to be paid and to stay up in the late night hours with overwhelming thoughts about the things you have no control over. The enemy realizes that if you were to ever figure out who you are and WHOSE you are, he would have no other choice but to give up and run in the other direction with his tail tucked.
By realizing who you are, you would also see the enemy for the coward that he is and therefore be able to recognize his attacks. One of my favorite scriptures that pertains to fear is 2 Timothy 1:7 “For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love and self-discipline.” So this tells us that the spirit of fear is NOT from God. He didn’t create you to live in fear. You were created to walk in BOLDNESS AND AUTHORITY through Christ Jesus! Ask yourself, what happened in your life that has caused you to be filled with fear? What is it that you are truly afraid of and are you ready to overcome the fear that’s held you in bondage for so long? If so, let’s look at two basic things that can help you break free from the chains of fear…
- Prayer & Meditating on God’s Word
- Face It
Prayer and meditating on God’s Word go hand-in-hand. If you’ve been lukewarm in both areas, there is no better time than now to kick it into gear and seek more intimacy with the King. Many times some of us feel like our prayers aren’t going past the ceiling. Why do you feel that way? Where is God in your schedule? Are you harboring unforgiveness in your heart? Have you been seeking His hand or His face? Prayer is a very important part of your journey. Some may think I’m crazy but I believe that prayer is right up there with oxygen! I think sometimes we forget how powerful prayer truly is because we’re too busy fixating our thoughts and actions on our current circumstances. Remember you give power to where your focus is. So if you’re constantly thinking “Lord, I’ll never get out of this!!” YOU WON’T!
Finally, it’s time to face your fear! You won’t ever accomplish much in life if you’re constantly afraid that you might make a mistake. You will never overcome what you refuse to face. Some of you reading this aren’t afraid of failing, you’re afraid to be great! Never be afraid to be all that God has created you to be. Trust me, when God’s hand is on it…Greatness is in reach!! Here is a poem by one of my favorite authors Mirianne Williamson. Enjoy!
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant,
gorgeous, handsome, talented and fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God.
Your playing small does not serve the world.
There is nothing enlightened about shrinking
so that other people won’t feel insecure around you.
We are all meant to shine, as children do.
We were born to make manifest the glory of God within us.
It is not just in some; it is in everyone.
And, as we let our own light shine, we consciously give
other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our fear,
our presence automatically liberates others.
